La comida

The food in Chile as I have experienced it so far is amazing. I'm lucky to have had hosts that explain to me what they traditionally eat so I can try a bit of everything. Here's a little taste of what I've tried so far...

My first meal was Pastel de Choclo: it was like a mashed corn pie with chicken, a hardboiled egg, an olive, and onions inside. You are supposed to sprinkle sugar or salt on top...I prefer sugar. YUM.

They also have jugos de frutas naturales EVERYWHERE. They have access to such amazing tropical fruits so they have delicious fruit juice anywhere you go. I've tried peach, mango, and guayaba. Love it.

A very popular drink to get veeeery happy is the Terremoto: basically a root beer float but with white wine instead of root beer, pineapple ice cream instead of vanilla, and grenadine if you want it sweet. Minimum 2 for a gringo.

Super 8 candy bar: a delicious candy bar of layers of wafers covered in chocolate.

Ceviche with mariscos: kind of like a soup with onions, cilantro, mariscos, lemon, and probably some other stuff.

Merluza (type of fish) con patatas salteadas con ensalada. They eat a lot of seafood and fish here obviously since it's right on the coast so I am going to have to learn to like it more. They also don't use salad dressing on their salad like we do...just a simple olive oil, lemon juice, and salt mix. So simple and so delicious.

Lots of ice cream. Score. I can get used to this.

Empanadas de camarones: they have empanadas everywhere...little fried pockets of deliciousness filled with cheese by itself or with seafood or meat as well.

Love me some vino tinto!

Consome: a type of soup served as the first dish a lot of times with eggs, carrots, peppers, onions, and cilantro.

Completo con palta: their version of the hot dog. Who needs ketchup and mustard when you can have a hot dog with tomatoes, palta (avocado), and mayo?

Carne asado. All types of meat off the grill. Dig in!
